Growing up with the best chef I've ever known, my mom, food has been part of my life. Learning from her, watching her and helping her has inspired me and given me the confidence to take the leap and start my business and share the art of 'campak - je' (just throwing in) making simple food yet captures flavours to the max. No measuring equipment needed for her methods of cooking just pure trust of gut feelings and years of experiences.
Every currypuff is handmade by myself to give you the best taste and textures out there.
Carefully prepared pastry giving extra flakiness, a handcrafted weave at the outside giving a satisfying crunch with every bite.
Malaysians enjoy savoury treats (kueh) for tea time. Try the currypuff with a cup of coffee or tea - the perfect combination.
Currypuffs or Karipap in Malay or Epok-Epok in Indonesia look like a tiny version of Spanish empanadas. However, they taste nothing like it.
Flaky & crispy pastry on the outside with gorgeous savoury curried potato filling. Currypuffs are one of many favourite 'kueh' (usually breakfast and teatime snacks) in South East Asia.
Enjoyed by different ethnic groups in multi-cultural Malaysia, everyone loves them, young and old. It has always been my family's favourite snack.
Now my kids and my German husband love them and I could not be happier. Making them now, always reminds me of the fun times I had with my mom and all my brothers. We even had a competition on who could do the prettiest weave on the currypuffs.
We were all so well trained in making them that my eldest brother made this family recipe of currypuffs as one of his specialties for his café in Selangor, Malaysia https://www.facebook.com/KopiWrap/.
He even called it 'Karipap Sultan' (the Royal Currypuff) after Kuala Kangsar, the town of Royalties, where our 'kampung' (home village) is.
So, if my brother can do it why not me? After many years of hesitation, I have finally picked-up the courage and started my business 'Currypuffs', making kueh, teatime treats, the way my mother has taught me, hoping to make her proud and continuing our family legacy. Who knows one day my daughters might decide to do the same.
My mission is to make currypuffs known throughout the UK and put a smile on your face as you try this irresistible delicacy.
Food this good should be shared with everyone, don't you think?
***Please do not hesitate to contact me to ask about any allergy information.
I cook my own fillings for the currypuffs, chicken curry, beef curry, 'sambal' sardine, prawn curry and sweet potato curry. All flavours are carefully balanced to ensure maximum taste with a bit of a kick.
